A rear-wheel-drive compact executive saloon that trades German badge appeal for Japanese build quality: the IS 300h hybrid is one of the cheapest premium cars to own over a decade.

The IS that made Lexus credible in the compact executive class: rear-wheel drive, a cabin that outlasts its German contemporaries and, with the IS 250, a sweet naturally aspirated V6. The diesel IS 220d is the trap, Toyota's 2.2 D-4D was troublesome and only came with a manual gearbox. The IS 250C folding hard-top and the 423 hp IS F are the interesting rarities.

The IS that finally matched the Germans on chassis and beat them on running costs. Rear-wheel drive, a stiff body and a well-made cabin; the IS 300h (2.5 petrol hybrid, 223 hp) is over 90% of Polish supply and a genuinely reliable car. The IS 250 V6 (until 2015) and the IS 200t/300 2.0 turbo (2015 on) are the rare petrol alternatives. The 2016 facelift added Lexus Safety System+ as standard and a nicer interior; it is worth the premium if the budget allows.
