Poland's default family car: enormous boot, cheap to run, easy to fix anywhere, and the RS versions give it real pace. Dull is the point.

The car that put half of Poland on wheels. Simple, spacious and cheap to keep running. The 1.9 TDI PD (105 hp) is legendary for durability, the 1.6 MPI is the LPG-friendly petrol, and the later 1.6/2.0 TDI common-rail and 1.4 TSI need a more careful look. Sold as the 'Octavia Tour' alongside the third generation until 2013 in Poland.

The MQB Octavia: much bigger inside, modern engines and the best value in its class. The 1.4 TSI 150 and 2.0 TDI 150 are the sweet spots; the 1.6 TDI is the fleet workhorse; the RS 230/245 is a genuinely quick family car. The DQ200 dry-clutch DSG on small engines remains the thing to check; wet-clutch DQ250/DQ381 on 2.0 units is fine.

Bigger, quieter and much more digital, with mild-hybrid eTSI petrols, a plug-in iV and the RS 245. Early cars suffered from infotainment software problems; later builds are fine.
