The compact benchmark: grown-up to drive, easy to own, holds value, and the GTI and R are properly quick.

A heavily revised Mk5 with a better interior and quieter body. The 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI CR diesels are solid; the 1.4 TSI twincharger and early DSG 7 are the traps. Cheap, plentiful and a good sub-25,000 PLN car if you pick the engine right.

The best all-round Golf: light, quiet, with the belt-driven EA211 petrols that fixed the old chain problems, and the EA288 diesels. 1.4 TSI 125/150 and 2.0 TDI 150 are the sweet spots; the GTI (gen-3 EA888) and R are quick and mostly durable. Dry-clutch DSG 7 on small engines remains the check.

Digital-first Golf with eTSI mild hybrids and a troubled early infotainment; mechanically sound and much better after software updates.
