Generation 7 2012–2020
The best all-round Golf: light, quiet, with the belt-driven EA211 petrols that fixed the old chain problems, and the EA288 diesels. 1.4 TSI 125/150 and 2.0 TDI 150 are the sweet spots; the GTI (gen-3 EA888) and R are quick and mostly durable. Dry-clutch DSG 7 on small engines remains the check.

- •Facelift 7.5 (2017–2020): LED headlights with a distinctive 'eyebrow' DRL, LED tail lights with animated indicators on higher trims
- •Variant estate; Sportsvan MPV is a separate body; GTI has red grille strip, R has quad exhausts
