Generation 3 2013–2020
The MQB Octavia: much bigger inside, modern engines and the best value in its class. The 1.4 TSI 150 and 2.0 TDI 150 are the sweet spots; the 1.6 TDI is the fleet workhorse; the RS 230/245 is a genuinely quick family car. The DQ200 dry-clutch DSG on small engines remains the thing to check; wet-clutch DQ250/DQ381 on 2.0 units is fine.

How to tell it apart
- •Pre-facelift (2013–2016): single rectangular headlights, sharp-edged grille
- •Facelift (2017–2020): split twin headlights on each side ('four eyes'), wider grille
- •Combi has a longer roof; Scout adds cladding and 4x4; RS has a lower stance, red brake calipers and twin exhausts
